Hi, I’m Kari. I’m a graphic designer based in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, driven by curiosity, a love of exploration, and storytelling.
I love the way design evokes emotions, organizes thoughts, shifts perspective, unearths questions, disrupts norms and can resonate with you beyond words. That created sense of awe, wonder, and connection keeps me creating.
My full name is Kari Manami Miedema; "Manami" meaning truth, love and beauty. I seek to embody these three descriptors both as a person and designer.
My love to create started young! As a kid, I had a very active imagination, constantly drawing, writing short stories, collaging and trying new crafts. So many of my art teachers invested in me, whether that was by giving me art supplies, inviting me to after school art classes, or allowing me to scheme up a theme and layout for the high school yearbook.
It wasn’t until my time in university that I realized my love for problem solving and storytelling, could be paired with my natural draw to visual communication and composition. That moment changed my trajectory.
As a rather reflective, detail-oriented person, constantly processing and exploring narratives in my inner world, I find design to be a place where thought joins with theme and symbolism, welcoming people into a visual story.
My hope is to continue exploring and visually tell your story with thoughtfulness and intention.
My best work comes when I feel connected to the story behind it. I’m especially drawn to brand and editorial work for this reason; where narratives are translated into visual language through symbolism, type, composition and imagery.
I am a system-builder and synthesizer. I take great pleasure in gathering information and refining it into key values, priorities and visuals. From here, I work to craft streamlined systems to organize that information, bringing clarity to each design.
Ultimately, curiosity, empathy, and a commitment to excellence shape my approach in creating work that strives to be intentional, honest and connected.
